about

CREDENTIALS is a rock band from Milwaukee, WI that draws heavy influence from the “Chicago-Louisville Pipeline'' of bands from the early to mid 90s (think June of 44, Shellac, US Maple, Slint, etc.). Each member has a long history of playing in a wide range of projects that cover the spectrum of rock and experimental genres. Previous and current projects have touched on everything from 80’s style synth pop (NO/NO), mathy post-punk (Murder in the Red Barn, Guns Blazing, Fuiguirnet), harsh noise and power electronics (Peter J. Woods, xALLxFORxTHISx), experimental techno (Bridges of Königsberg), bluegrass (Grasping at Straws), dance/electro-pop (Pleasure Thief), hardcore (Galactic Cannibal), and more. With these collected experiences to build on, CREDENTIALS creates a layered yet cohesive sound that’s abstract and expressive, technical and emotional.

“Why is my arm not a lilac tree?,” CREDENTIALS' debut album, represents the first chapter in the band’s slowly evolving history. Stretching back to their origins in 2018, the record covers the complete body of work written by the band up to this point with updated versions of all the songs recorded for the 2019 demo album and two new songs that have yet to be performed live. “Why is my arm not a lilac tree?” foregrounds the diverse set of influences that the four band members draw on. Everything from grating Shellac-esque guitar riffs, ambient soundscapes, stoner rock dirges, mythopoetic language, experimental music making techniques, and the tightly wound polyrhythms of groups like Uzeda all make appearances. But rather than presenting these influences as distinct elements or one massive (and muddled) sonic identity, CREDENTIALS weaves these musical forms in a unique and compatible way. In the rich tapestry that is “Why is my arm not a lilac tree?”, the band’s 90s Chicago/Louisville influences speak while simultaneously creating an album that sounds wholly new.
